There is a reason why Google is at the center of our digital lives. If you research the origin of Google as a company you will discover that prior to working together Larry Page and Sergey Brin had separate but similar ideas on how to reimagine search online. There were several dominant players in search at the time and anyone looking to enter the space would have to face down several established giants. Nonetheless these two decided to investigate developing a way to index using page rank, and wrote collaboratively a graduate research project that would eventually become Google.
Google has since grown through acquisitions, partnerships and project development allowing Google to represent a growing array of products and services from Gmail to Android. One of my favorite Quora questions is what is it like to work with Larry Page and Sergey Brin? Is sheds a light on some of their strengths as leaders and collaborators.
The strength of Google truly comes from an openness and willingness to collaborate and work together to attain great goals. In the series Google: Bloomberg Game Changers, Eric Schmidt is quoted as saying about Brin and Page “the greatest highlight of my personal and professional life, I think is the collaboration that I have with these two extraordinary people”.
I think in addition to thinking big collaboration is what drives Alphabet’s success.
